Petra listened to the conversation for what felt like the hundredth time.

“Good. Since I have you here, can you update me on our plan?”

“We received an update from him yesterday. He said things are moving along and he will be ready ahead of schedule.”

“So everything is ready?”

“Yes, I believe so.”

“Has he figured out his strategy for planting it? Security around the palace will not be light.”

“Sir, I’m quite sure that he has a strategy. It’s better if we don’t know. That will make it easier for us to claim denial.”

“Very well.”

Frowning, Petra switched off the recording from Fayed’s office. What the hell? She had spent the past twelve hours going through files, notes, and transcribed conversations trying to figure out what the latest discussion between Marzouk Fayed and Khaled Majed described.

Fayed, Majed, and a “him”? Planting something in a palace? She frowned, recalling the original conversation that had precipitated the whole operation. Thirty million euros.

She tapped the screen, pulled up the transcript of the original conversation in Arabic, and stared at it. Nothing. She tapped her screen again and switched to the bug’s time log to look through the full records of Fayed’s conversations and computer activity. Tell me something, anything.

Fayed’s log showed a series of conversations with secretaries and other Parliament members, the conversation with Khaled, and numerous e-mails sent through the computer. Thankfully, the bugs were sophisticated enough to give her a full picture of his day-to-day activities.

She scrolled through the subjects listed for the e-mails that he had sent. Most of the e-mails were categorized as social or about the upcoming elections. Maybe Khaled Majed’s log? As the log loaded, she noticed that it was quite different from what she would have expected for a senior political aide. There were several messages between Khaled Majed and an “OZ”:

June 24, 2021 – Khaled Majed received from OZ: “E priority election date. Decision TBD.”

Khaled Majed sent to OZ: “Continue high-priority monitoring.”

June 25, 2021 – Khaled Majed received from OZ: “E remains adamant. Decision made.”

Khaled Majed sent to OZ: “Good. Continue to update.”

June 26, 2021 – Khaled Majed received from OZ: “Status quo unchanged.”

Khaled Majed sent to OZ: “Continue to update as needed.”

Petra frowned. Who is OZ? Are those someone’s initials, O. Z., or a codename? Someone who reports to Majed? And what about E?

She studied the log for a minute before she remembered something from the beginning of the conversation between Fayed and Khaled. She quickly reopened the transcript of it in Fayed’s log. The first thing Fayed had asked about was, of course, the election date.

She leaned back in her chair as the realization struck her. “Majed, you crooked twit. You have a spy in the Emir’s office. E is for Emir,” she said, chuckling. “But what are they planting? And who is doing it?” She sighed, wishing she had more insight.

She logged onto her Agency server and pressed a few buttons to dial Chris through the computer.

“Hello,” she heard a moment later.

“Hey, it’s Petra.”

“Hey. Can you speak freely?”

“Should be fine.
